완전한 인간 A Full Person

DESCRIPTION

두 화면에 각각 "예술가"와 "배우"가 등장한다. 그들은 앞으로 있을 (가상의) 퍼포먼스를 연습하기 위해 만난 것으로, 이 퍼포먼스에서 "배우"는 "예술가"의 역할을 대신해 그의 작업에 대해 이야기하게 되어 있다. 하지만 “예술가”와 “배우” 이 두 역할은, 이 비디오에서 한 배우에 의해서 연기된다. 둘 사이의 대화 (사실은 두 독백으로 구성된) 에서는, 배우로서의 역할 연기, 사회 안에서의 역할 수행, 자기 연출, 주체성 및 정체성의 해체와 재조합 등의 개념이 거론된다.

‘2-channel-video projection shows a rehearsal scene, in which an “artist” and an “actress” are doing their first read-through for a (fictional) performance. In this performance, the “actress” is supposed to take the role of the “artist” and to talk about the concepts of her works. The both characters however are acted by one actress. In the dialogue, which actually consists of two monologues, the ideas of role-playing, presentation of self, construction of identity and subjectivity are dealt with as main subjects.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

세계는 거대한 극장이다. 인간은 모두 자신을 연기하는 배우로서 주어진 역할을 수행한다. 하지만 이 역할은 자기 자신이 부여하는 것인가? 아니면 타인의 기대와 시선에 부합하기 위해 만들어지는 것인가? 자아를 외부 영향력에서 온전히 분리하는 것은 가능한 일인가? 내 작업에 등장하는 인물들은 타인의 인정과 인식에 의해 규정되는 존재로서 그려진다. 자아와 정체성은 외부에서부터 부여되며 그들 자신은 외부에서 제공하는 내용에 맞게 변형 가능한 유동적인 프레임이다. 그들은 무대 위에서 주체적으로 역할을 창조하는 배우가 아니라, 타인의 시선에 의해 조종되는 일종의 퍼펫이다. 하지만 이 타인들 역시 모두 퍼펫이기에 이 시선의 끈을 소유하는 사람은 존재하지 않는다. 시선은 개체 내부에서 기인하는 것이 아니라 개체와 개체 사이의 관계 안에서만 존재한다.

The world is a gigantic theater, in which people act themselves, playing given roles. Are these roles, however, given by the actors themselves? Or are they created in order to fulfill the expectations of others? Is one´s identity solely independent from the influence of others? The characters in my works are presented as those who are stipulated by the recognition and the acknowledgement from others. They are flexible frames that can be metamorphosed according to the given contents. They are not the actors who subjectively create their roles, but puppets, being controlled by the gaze of others. Since these others are all also puppets, the strings of gaze are not held by anyone. Gaze stems not from the inside of an individual, but from in between the individuals.

장서영은 비디오를 중심으로 한 다양한 매체로 작업한다. 조소를 전공하면서 물질이 갖는 조형성에 관심을 가졌으나 현재는 생각, 언어, 관념 등이 이루는 균형과 규칙, 조화에서 미적 가능성을 찾는다. 발화, 텍스트, 신체 움직임 등을 주요 재료로 하는 그의 작업은, 인간의 조건을 탐색하는 일종의 사고 실험이다. 현재 베를린에서 거주, 작업 중이다.
