DESCRIPTION
영화 속에 등장하는 대표적 이미지의 여성 15명이 “페넬로페”라는 인물로 탄생. 그녀의 모놀로그로 이루어진 이 작품은 여성성이란 영화 속에서 만들어진 판타지라는 점에 착안한다. 영화 프레임 안에 여성의 바디를 제외하고 아무것도 남겨두지 않는다. 오직 페넬로페 만이 어두운 무대 위에 남아 계속해서 스포트라이트를 받고 있다..
A monologue weaved of fifteen iconic cinematic women into a single entity - “Penelope”. It is a reflection on the construction of the woman as staged fantasy generated in cinema. Through the removal of everything but the woman in the frame, Penelope is constantly in the spotlight on a dark stage.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I’m appropriating (re-contextualizing) this known footage precisely, to play with collective memory and collective fantasy. Penelope deconstructs the viewer’s memories and fantasy of the cinematic woman they grew to know and that which shaped our understanding of the idea of a woman today. Penelope addresses a genealogy of a fantasy, the fantasy of the woman as generated in cinema, using female starlets that were directed by male directors. The title Penelope refers to The Odyssey, a primitive foundation of a fictional woman fantasy that in the literary history represented a completely different fantasy, and so I enhance the cinematic contribution to the shaping of this fantasy over time.
