DESCRIPTION
어둠 속에 철골을 드러낸 공사중인 건물이 모습을 드러내고 그 안에 커다란 자재를 옮기는 인부들의 모습이 보인다. 마리아 칼라스의 목소리와 함께 등장하는 건물은 조명의 색
과 함께 아름답게 디자인된 무대를 연상케 하고 건물 안에서 조그맣게 보이는 인부들의 움직임은 무대 위 퍼포먼스처럼 섬세한 미장센을 완성한다. 작품이 촬영된 두바이에서는
대규모의 도시 개발이 진행되고 있고 많은 동남아 이민자들이 값싼 노동력으로 동원되고 있다. 어둠 속에 우뚝 솟아있는 커다란 미완의 건물, 현대적인 건물 건설에 동원된 인부들의 밤샘 수작업, 공사장의 소음과 교차되는 지난날을 회상하는 내용의 아리아는 함께 아이러니한 조화를 이루며 이 비현실적인 현실에 대한 낯설게 보기를 시도한다. (설경숙)
The building under construction exposes its steel skeleton in the dark, and we see the workers in it. On Maria Callas’ voice, the building decorated with colorful lights seems like a beautifully designed stage. The workers’ movements complete the careful mise-en-scene as the performers. The film has been shot in Dubai, where a big-scale development is in process and South East Asian workers are offered jobs with low wages for the constructions. The unfinished building in the dark, manual labor of the workers through the night for this modern architecture and aria juxtaposed with the noise of construction are all orchestrated into one big irony and describe the surreal reality.
