PROGRAM NOTE

벤 리버스의 영화는 다큐멘터리와 픽션의 경계에 있다. 그는 직설적으로 설명하는 것을 피하며 영화 속 등장인물들에 대해 무엇이 사실이고 진실인가를 전달하려 하지 않는다. 관객들이 영화에 나오는 이미지들을 그 자체로 의미 있게 보기를 바라며 관객들이 유추하고 상상할 여백을 남겨둔다. 어차피 우리는 그것이 길든 짧든 ‘한 순간’을 보고 한 사람에 대해 모든 것을 알 수가 없기 때문이다.

벤 리버스는 문명사회로부터 스스로 떨어져 나와 자연에서 사는 사람들의 이야기를 다룬 영화를 만들고자 했을 때 제이크 윌리엄스를 만나게 되었다. 그리고 그와 함께 만든 영화가 바로 <여기가 나의 땅이다>이다. 리버스는 산업과 거리를 두고 자급자족으로 살아가는 윌리엄스의 삶과 작업 방식에서 작가 자신과의 유사점을 발견한다. (손세희)

Ben Rivers’ films blur the border between documentary and fiction. He avoids an explicit explanation and does not attempt to portray the truth about the characters in his film. Rivers wants the viewers to enjoy the images as they are and leaves space for interpretation and imagination. For him, anyway, it is not possible to know everything about a person from watching an episode in their life, whether it is short or long.   

When looking for someone who had isolated themselves from civil society and lives in nature, Rivers met Jake Williams. This is My Land is the film made with Williams. Rivers was fascinated by parallels between his own way of life and Willams’ self-reliance and way of working. (Seihee SHON) 

 

벤 리버스 팰머스 예술대학에서 순수미술을 전공했고 졸업 후에는 독학으로 16mm영화 제작과 핸드 프로세싱을 배웠다. 벤 리버스는 자발적으로 사회를 떠나 사는 사람들을 찾아 영화를 만들어왔으며 조작되지 않은 필름들은 작가에게 주변부의 대안적 삶을 상상하는 간접적인 내러티브의 시작점을 제시한다. 그의 첫 극영화 <바다에서 2년>은 68회 베니스영화제에서 수상하였으며, 2011년42회 아트바젤에서 발로아즈 예술상을 수상했다. 2010년과 2012년에는 자만 어워드 후보에 올랐다. 최근 더글라스 하이드 갤러리(더블린, 2013), 케이트 맥 갤러리(런던, 2012), 헤이워드 갤러리(런던, 2011) 등에서 전시했다.

Ben RIVERS Ben Rivers studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art. After his degree he taught himself 16mm filmmaking and hand-processing. Often following and filming people who have in some way separated themselves from society, the raw film footage provides Rivers with a starting point for creating oblique narratives imagining alternative existences in marginal worlds. He is the recipient of numerous prizes including: 68th Venice Film Festival for his first feature film Two Years At Sea; the Baloise Art Prize, Art Basel 42, 2011; shortlisted for the Jarman Award 2010/2012. Recent exhibitions include: Douglas Hyde Gallery (Dublin, 2013); Kate MacGarry (London, 2012); Hayward Gallery (London, 2011); Matt’s Gallery (London 2011).
