PROGRAM NOTE

올해 네마프 전시제를 위해 미디어극장 아이공의 커미션으로 제작된 김세진의 신작이다. 작가는 여행을 하며 실제로 국경에서 경험했던 시간들을 재구성했다. 영화적 서사구조 안에서 허구와 실제의 경계는 모호해지고 사운드, 텍스트, 음악, 퍼포먼스와의 조합을 통해 총체극을 시도했다.

세계화 시대의 오늘, 많은 이들이 유목민 같은 삶을 선택하고 국경을 오가는 일은 과거에 비해 쉬워진 듯 보인다. 그러나 안전, 사회질서 유지, 국익 등의 논리를 내세우는 국가라는 거대 집단 앞에서, 한 개인이 얼마나 연약한 존재이며 때로는 인간의 기본적 자존감마저 보장받기 어려운지 종종 경험한다. 공항, 일종의 유예의 공간인 이곳에서 누군가 춤을 춘다. 무엇을 향한 춤일까? (손세희)

This is KIM Sejin’s new work commissioned by Media Theater IGong for the 15th Nemaf Exhibition. The artist has reconstructed her real experiences at borders while travelling through different countries. Within the cinematic narrative, the boundary between the fictional and the factual is blurred. She attempts a kino-drama combining sound, text, music and performance.

In the era of globalisation, many people choose nomadic lives and it seems easier than ever to move from country to country. However, time and again, we see how vulnerable an individual is when faced with the collective might of a whole country. Sometimes one person’s basic rights are forgotten within the complex web of rules of health and safety, social order, national security, and so on. Here, in an airport, a space in which to wait, suspended in time, life postponed, someone is dancing. Why? What is it for? (Seihee SHON)

 

김세진

서강대학교 영상대학원 영상미디어과에서 영화를 전공하고 영국의 슬레이드 미술대학에서 미디어아트를 전공했다. 김세진은 영상의 다양한 기법을 이용해 여러 시스템들이 동시다발적으로 공존하는 복잡한 현대사회에서 필연적으로 발생되는 인간의 고립과 고독, 불안과 같은 삶의 결핍과 같은 간극에 주목한다. 2015년 이스탄불 프리즈마 스페이스와 2014년 문화역 서울284 RTO에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 2014년 <건너 편의 시선> (문신미술관, 서울), 2011년 <블룸버그 뉴 컨템포러리즈>(ICA갤러리, 런던) 등 다수의 국내외 전시에 참여했다. 

 
 
 
 

 

KIM Sejin

KIM Sejin received a MFA in Fine Art from Slade School of Fine Art in London and a MA in Film/TV from Sogang University in Seoul. She works with a variety of media apparatuses to explore lacks and gaps in individuals’ lives such as isolation, loneliness, and anxiety, in complex contemporary societies with different power systems.

Her works have been shown nationally and internationally including Prizma Space (Istanbul, 2015), Seoul 284 RTO (Seoul, 2014), Sookmyung Women’s University Moonshin Museum (Seoul, 2014), INIVA (London, 2012), and ICA Gallery (London, 2011).
