Artist's Statement

‘8명의 남자가 사는 방 – 뉴스’ 이 연작으로서, 이 영상 작업은 1974년 발표된 이광복의 논픽션 소설 <몰락한 시민들> 에서 시작되었다. 이 소설은 실제 근로자 합숙소에서 지냈던 작가의 자전적 경험을 바탕으로 한 소설이었고, 1973년 새해 첫날 근로자 합숙소에서 함께 지내는 8명의 남자들이 술기운에 취해 ‘타향살이’ 를 부르다 관리인에게 혼나는 장면이 묘사되어 있다. 영상 속 공간의 빛은 낮에서 밤으로, 끊임없이 흐르는 시간을 연상시키는 조명의 형태로 변화한다. 또한 이 공간에는 8명의 이주 노동자들이 술취해 부르는 ‘타향살이’ 의 합창이 울려퍼진다. 이 작업은 픽션과 논픽션의 경계에 있는 한 순간을 기념하기 위한 작업이다. 이 공간은 지방에서 서울로 떠나온 이주노동자들의 노랫소리를 위한 무대이며, 기록되지 않은 빛과 소리가 흐르는 영화적 재연의 공간이다.

As a series work of ‘Eight Men Lived in the Room – News’ ,this video was inspired by a nonfiction novel ‘The Fallen Citizen’ written by Kwang-bok Lee in 1974. This novel was written in the autobiographical aspect by the novelist who actually spent some time in the boardinghouse in Yeongdeunpo. There was a scene that eight men who were living together in the same room of the boardinghouse was singing a song ‘living away from home’ on the first day of 1973 after drinking alcohol. The work was for commemoration of a moment that stands between boundaries of a fiction and nonfiction. It was a stage for a song of immigrant workers who came to Seoul from other cities and a space for the cinematic representation where unrecorded light and sound flowed.

권혜원

권혜원 작가는 특정한 사건이나 기억이 배어 있는 장소들을 리서치 한 후, 이것을 영상으로 서사화한다. 그는 영상을 서사 구조를 구축하는 현장으로 생각하고, 리서치 과정에서 발견된 요소들을 통해 공간적이고, 조형적인 서사구조를 만들어낸다. 2011년 영국 블룸버그 뉴컨템포러리 작가로 선정되었으며, 최근 참여한 전시로는 백남준아트센터의 <웅얼거리고 일렁거리는>, 국립현대미술관 덕수궁관의 <신여성, 도착하다> 등이 있다.

KWON Hyewon

Kwon Hyewon captures stories of individuals and spaces hidden from historical records and reconstructs them into videos, after researching places associated with particular past events and memories. She was selected as a Bloomberg New Contemporary(United Kingdom) in 2011 and participated in the SeMA Nanji Residency, the Seoul Museum of Art’s residency program, in 2016. Her recent exhibitions include 《Common Front, Affectively》(Nam June Pail Art Center, Yongin , 2018), 《The Arrival of New Women》(MMCA Deoksugung Gallery, Seoul, 2017).
