ARTIST'S NOTE

2013년 9월 21일, 케냐 나이로비에서 발생한 테러로 나는 친구를 잃었다. 그녀의 가족과 지인들에게 너무나 충격적인 사건이었으나, 일반 대중의 관심과 기억에서는 거의 즉시 잊혔다. 익명의 희생자로 언론에 잠시 비쳤을 뿐 하루아침에 세상에서 소거된 친구의 존재는 나에게 여전히 선명했고 '그렇다면 사회에서 공적인 애도의 대상이 되는 기준은 무엇일까, 유가족조차 충분한 애도의 기간이나 감정 표시를 허락지 않는 문화적 관습을 어떻게 바라보아야 할까'를 스스로 질문하게 했으며, 같은 질문과 상처를 껴안고 사는 타인들의 내면을 담아내는 작업 <구경꾼(2016)>과 <세상에서 제일 쓸데없는 짓을 합니다. 제가(2017)>로 이어졌다.

In September 21, 2013, I lost a friend of mine by a terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya. It was such a shocking incident to her family and acquaintances. But it was almost immediately forgotten in the attention and memory of the general public. Her disappearing from the world as an unknown victim has led me to ask, 'What is the difference between death without attention and death in public mourning, and how should we look at Korean cultural customs that even the bereaved families do not allow for a sufficient period of mourning or a display of emotion?'

DESCRIPTION

미선과 정윤은 각자 잊히지 않는 꿈 이야기를 서로에게 들려준다. 미선은 다친 고양이를, 정윤은 몇 해 전 세상을 떠난 친구를 꿈속에서 보았다. 정윤은 죽어가는 친구를 단지 두려운 눈으로 바라보고만 있었던 자신의 모습에 죄책감을 느낀다.

Misun and Jeonyoon tell each other their unforgettable dream stories. Misun saw her cat hurt, and Jeongyoon saw a friend who passed away a few years ago in their dream. Jeongyoon feels guilty to herself only looking at her dying friend with fear.

안정윤은 죽음과 대면한 이들을 만난다. 다가오는 죽음과 이미 일어난 죽음, 자신의 죽음과 타인의 죽음이 그들의 눈앞에 무엇으로 그려지고 그들에게 어떤 감정을 남기는지 대화하고 생각하고 자신의 문법으로 재구성하는 영상 작업을 하고 있다. <공화국찬가(2009)>는 2010년 로테르담국제영화제 상영, 서울국제뉴미디어페스티벌 신진작가상 수상, <구경꾼(2016)>은 2016년 서울국제실험영화제 Korean EXiS Award 수상, 한국영상자료원 우수독립영화수집사업 대상작으로 선정되었다.

Ahn Jeongyoon meets people and explores what universal thoughts of human death and actual memories of someone's death are portrayed in their minds and what emotions they feel. Her video work consists of text based on real conversation and poetic images created with her own grammar. 'The Hymn of a Republic' (2009) was screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and won the Seoul International NewMedia Festival's Rising Artist Award in 2010. 'Onlooker'(2016) won the Korean EXiS Award at the Experimental Film & Video Festival in Seoul and was selected as the best independent film collection project by the Korean Film Archive in 2016.
