ARTIST'S NOTE

2017년 나는 오비도르에서 실험적인 예술 설치를 기획했다. 이 자체적으로 운영되는 커뮤니티에 흥미를 느낀 나는 그들의 예술 비엔날레를 기록해 달라는 초대를 수락했고, 그들의 소외된 목소리를 정중하게 증폭시키고자 했다. 우리의 소규모 제작진은 12개월 동안 오비도르 스쿼트를 방문하여 일상을 포착했다. 감독이라기보다는 경청자(포르투갈어로 '우비도르'를 뜻함)의 역할을 하며 주민들이 편안하게 자신의 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 공간을 만들었다. 이러한 접근 방식은 다큐멘터리에 독특한 관점을 제공하고 커뮤니티에 대한 접근성을 높여주었다. 오비도르 스쿼트는 다양한 관점을 대변하는 생생한 주인공으로 등장했다. 교외 거주자, 성소수자, 미혼모, 이민자, 흑인 커뮤니티 및 기타 소외된 그룹으로 구성된 이 커뮤니티는 역사적, 사회경제적 역경에 맞서 공동의 투쟁을 보여주었다. 이 다큐멘터리는 이들의 회복탄력성, 결단력, 성공과 좌절에서 배울 수 있는 능력을 강조한다. 나의 의도는 관객들에게 오비도르의 소우주의 생동감을 소개하고 그들 안에 비슷한 열정을 불러일으키는 것이다.

In 2017, I organized an experimental artistic installation at Ouvidor. Intrigued by this self-managed community, I accepted their invitation to document their Art Biennial, aiming to respectfully amplify their underrepresented voices. Our small crew spent 12 months visiting Ouvidor squat, capturing daily life. Acting more as a listener (“ouvidor” in Portuguese) than a director, I created a space where residents felt comfortable sharing their stories. This approach provided a unique perspective for the documentary and enhanced our access to the community. Ouvidor squat emerged as a vibrant protagonist in our story, representing diverse viewpoints. The community—comprising suburbanites, LGBTQIA+ members, single mothers, immigrants, Black communities, and other marginalized groups—illustrated a shared struggle against historical and socio-economic adversities. The documentary highlights their resilience, determination, and ability to learn from both successes and setbacks. My intention is to introduce audiences to the vibrancy of Ouvidor’s microcosm and ignite a similar passion within them.
