북위 78도 -27도 이하로 기온이 떨어지는 세계 최북단 정착지, 그곳에는 어떤 종류의 정원이 펼쳐질까? 바다와 땅 그리고 하늘이 폭설로 뒤덮여 몇 달 동안 해가 뜨지 않은 긴 겨울, 식물은 이러한 극한 환경을 어떻게 견뎌낼 수 있을까? 북극의 정원, 그것은 얻을 수 없는 꿈일까, 아니면 가치 있는 추구일까?
<북극 정원>은 관찰과 명상 그리고 상상을 통하여 ‘하나의 그늘이 다른 그늘에 녹아드는’ 장소를 이동하며 ‘그들이 모두 거기에 있는’ , 즉 공간과 시간의 경계가 허물어지는 유토피아적 정원을 탐색한다(Fridtjof Nansen, Farthest North, 1897).
