DESCRIPTION
‘잡초’의 일반적인 정의는 ‘잘못된 곳에 있는 식물’ 또는 ‘그것이 원하지 않는 곳에서 자라는 식물’이다. 그렇다면 식물이 자라기에 올바른 장소는 어디인가?
유럽 최대 활화산인 에트나산에는 한 시칠리아 식물이 있었다. 그 식물은 옥스퍼드 식물원을 통해 1690년경 영국에 소개되었다. 그러나 그 식물이 전해진 정확한 이동 경로는 여전히 미스터리로 남아 있다. 그때 이후로, 그 식물은 영국 사람들과 얽히며 떠돌아다니게 되었다. 그들이 알고 있든지 모르든지 말이다. 그는 소위 래그워트 (어원은 ‘누더기 식물’에서 유래), 흔히 잡초라고 불린다.
The general definition of a ‘weed’ is ‘a plant in the wrong place’ or ‘a plant growing where it is not wanted’. Where then is the right place for a plant to grow?
There was a Sicilian plant on Mount Etna, the most active volcano in all of Europe. The plant was introduced to the United Kingdom around 1690 via the Oxford Botanic Garden. However, its exact route of migration remains a mystery. Since then, the plant has been wandering and mingling with the British people, whether they know it or not. This is the so-called ragwort (with its origin in ‘ragged wild plants’), commonly called a weed.

엘리 허경란은 시간 기반 미디어와 학제 간 연구를 통하여 사회 생태학적 연대와 갈등 그리고 공존을 탐구하며 예술적 담론 공간을 창출한다. 최근 작업은 예술이 인간중심주의와 생태중심주의 사이의 긴장에 대한 우리의 인식과 반응을 어떻게 전복할 수 있는지, 사회적 관습에 의해 종종 외면받는 생태적 갈등을 어떻게 조명할 수 있는지, 그리고 생명체 개체와 집단 그리고 환경 사이의 관계에 대한 담론 ─ 토론, 성찰, 재구성 ─ 을 어떻게 촉진할 수 있는지 연구한다.
Ellie Kyungran Heo is an artist who explores socio-ecological solidarity, conflict and coexistence through time-based media and interdisciplinary research. Her recent work studies how art can affect our perceptions of and responses to tensions between anthropocentrism and ecocentrism, how it can highlight ecological conflicts often neglected by social convention, and how it can promote alternative discourses—debate, reflection, and reconstruction—on relationships between living beings, and between their societies and environments.
