ARTIST'S NOTE

망명 삼부작의 마지막 <굿바이 마이러브 NK: 붉은 청춘>에서 소비에트, 카자흐스탄에서 활동했던 북한 출신 작가 한진이 죽는 곳에 고향 만큼 정다운 이름을 붙이고자 했던 언명을 일제 강제 동원 역사관의 아카이브 사진들, 우슈토베, 사할린의 고려 사람 사진들과 묘소들을 통해 이미지화 하는 작업

Harvesting Light: Graves of Diaspora opens with a line from Han Jin (1931-1993) born in North Korea and sought a political asylum after denouncing KIM Ilsung while he was a student at VGIK , worked and lived in Russia and Kazakhstan. He throws a question, “We call home where people are born but what do we call where people are buried? It should sound as tender as home.” This marks an opening scene of Good Bye My Love, North Korea( the last film of Exile Trilogy). His calling for affectionate naming for the place of burial is yet to be elaborated. The introduction of harvesting light and photosynthesis alludes to the overlapping practices of theory and image making/ rendering in the digital age partly governed by the dissemination of quantum knowledge pivoting on the notions of entanglement, superposition and defraction.

DESCRIPTION

두 북한 소녀들( 1955년 캄차카 이주 노동)의 시선으로 고려 사람들, 식민지 시기 광부들의 먼 곳의 묘소, 부재한 묘소를 바라본다. 식물들이 태양빛을 받아 광합성(Photosynthesis) 을 이루어내듯, 망자들의 사진을 화광 (harvesting light)한다. 아카이브 이미지들에 빛을 비추어 역사의 페이지에 올린다. 양자생물학의 빛의 수확(harvesting light)에 영감을 받은 작업.

Harvesting light : The Graves of Diaspora is a work in remembrance and re-animating the significance of the burial place of people by synthesizing photos of different sources. The photo of two North Korean girls offers a template of harvesting light over the photosynthesis of miners of the colonial times and migrant of Koryo people. The work is inspired by the quantum biology to evoke the political ecology of archival images.

김소영: 학자, 감독으로 활동하는 김소영은 <거류>(2000)를 비롯해 <황홀경>(2002), <원래, 여성은 태양이었다>(2004)로 이어지는 여성사 3부작 다큐멘터리와 장편 극영화 <경>을 연출하였다. 이후 작품으로는 2015년 장편 다큐멘터리 <도시를 떠돌다>, 유라시아 고려인의 서사를 다룬 망명 3부작 <눈의 마음: 슬픔이 우리를 데려가는 곳>, <고려 아리랑: 천산의 디바>, <굿바이 마이 러브NK: 붉은 청춘>이 있다.

이애림: 제주도 출신의 만화가, 애니메이션 감독, 일러스트레이터이다.

KIM, Soyoung directed ‘Women's History Trilogy’(Koryu: Southern women/South Korea, I'll Be Seeing Her, New Woman: Her First Song) screened at many international film festivals including Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. She also has made a feature-length fiction film entitled Viewfinder(2010) and a documentary Drifting City about African traders in Guangzhou, China. She has completed ‘Exile Trilogy’ composed of Goodbye My Love, North Korea as well as Heart of Snow, Heart of Blood and Sound of Nomad: Koryo Arirang.

LEE Aerim is a cartoonist, animation director, and illustrator from Jeju Island.
