  김현주x조광희Hyunjoo Kim x Kwanghee Cho

  김현주와 조광희는 [나는 누구인가]라는 존재론적, 사회론적 질문과 함께 상실되거나 파편적으로 편재된 현대문명 속에서 살아가는 개인과 공동체 그리고 그들이 만들어 낸 땅의 풍경에 주목한다. 이들은 특정 지역 또는 사건에 속한 개개인의 이름을 호명하며 구술을 기반으로 개인과 집단의 구체적 삶에 대한 이해와 공감의 지평을 확장해냄으로써 망각되거나 뒤엉킨 삶으로부터 방치된 또 다른 삶의 목소리들을 바깥 세계로 불러 세운다.
  2019년 <빼뻘 – 주름> 프로젝트를 시작으로 듀오로 작업을 진행해 오고 있는 이들은 미군기지와 인접해 있는 방치된 미군전용클럽, 기프트숍, 중식당과 같은 곳을 예술공간으로 확장하여, 주민과 예술가 간의 직간접적 영향을 주고받으며 서로에게 보이거나 보이지 않는 변화들을 경험하고 있다. 근간에는 전쟁과 식민지, 미군 주둔에 의한 갈등 등 닮은 꼴을 한 오키나와와 한국 내 기지촌들을 교차 탐방하면서 양국의 서사를 ‘낭독’을 통해 교환하는 프로젝트 ‘땅과 바다 – 얽힘과 엮임의 무늬들’을 진행하였다.

  Kim Hyunju and Cho Kwanghee focus on the ontological and sociological question of “Who am I?” and the lost or fragmented landscapes of individuals and communities living in modern civilization and the landscapes they have created. By naming individuals belonging to specific regions or events and expanding the horizons of understanding and empathy for the concrete lives of individuals and groups based on oral histories, they bring other voices from forgotten or intertwined lives to the outside world.
  Working as a duo since 2019 with the project Pucker - Wrinkle, the artists have expanded their artistic practice to include an abandoned military club, gift shop, and Chinese restaurant adjacent to a U.S. military base, where residents and artists interact directly and indirectly with each other, experiencing visible and invisible changes. At its core, the project “Land and Sea - Patterns of Entanglement and Interweaving” exchanges the narratives of both countries through “readings” while cross-visiting Okinawa and South Korea's military bases, which have similarities such as war, colonization, and conflicts caused by the U.S. military presence.
