ARTIST'S NOTE

2012년 양평동 1가에 방치된 양은냄비 공장에 예술공간 인디아트홀 공이 들어서고 자본주의적 개발논리 속에 2021년 공장이 폐쇄되기 전까지,이 예술공장은 문화를 생산하는 주체로 그 기능과 역량을 다했다. 화이트 큐브로서만이 아니라 바깥공간, 즉 지역사회, 공동체, 장소, 건축 등으로 확장되고 상호작용하는 다른 감각지각적 장(場)이었다. 비어있던 공장 건물에 요리하는 사운드 아티스트 조병희 대표가 대안적 식공간 개업을 위해 입주하였고 이후 비영리적이며 실험적인 예술활동을 10여년간 진행했다. 거대한 창문과 높은 천장, 넓은 면적이라는 주어진 조건 외에 모든 공간 인테리어를 직접 했고, 작가들이 능동적으로 사용할 수 있게 지원을 아끼지 않았다. 자의반타의반으로 도시재생에 기여하게 되면서 이에 따른 젠트리피케이션의 발생을 피할 수 없었다. 이미지 개선은 임대료 상승을 유발하고 이는 지불능력이 충분하지 못한 예술가나 소상공인을 다른 지역으로 내쫓는 원인이 된다.인디아트홀 공이 있던 1000여평의 공장대지가 팔려서 공업시설과 건물이 모두 철거되고 상업시설이 들어서면서 장소성이 변화했다. 2024년 현재,공장의 흔적은 완전히 지워지고 BH메타플렉스 지식산업센터가 들어섰다. 반세기 이상을 견디며 그 시작을 일제강점기에서부터 찾을 수 있는 물리적 고증물이 사라졌다. 하지만, 공간이 완전히 사라진 것이 아니다. 사람들은 여전히 공간과 밀접한 관련을 맺으면서 유의미한 경험, 공간적 실천을 통해 이해가능한 방식으로 우리의 관념적 세계에 공간/장소를 재배치한다.소멸당하고 은폐될 때마다 끊임없이 저항하고 담론을 만들어내고 다중의 장소성을 만들어낸다. 변화와 전유를 추구하는 상상력으로.

In 2012, a disused aluminum pot factory in Yangpyeong-dong 1-ga was transformed into the Indi Arthall Gong. Until the factory's closure in 2021 due to capitalist development, this art space fully leveraged its function and capabilities as a producer of culture. Beyond the given conditions of huge windows, high ceilings, and a vast area, she personally handled all the interior design and provided unwavering support to ensure artists could actively utilize the space. Inadvertently, the space contributed to urban regeneration, making the onset of gentrification unavoidable. As of 2024, all traces of the factory have been completely erased, replaced by the BH Metaplex Knowledge Industrial Center. A physical testament that had endured for over half a century, tracing its origins back to the Japanese colonial period, has vanished.
However, the space itself hasn't entirely disappeared. People continue to forge close connections with it, meaningfully reconfiguring "space/place" within our conceptual world through their experiences and spatial practices. Each time it's obliterated or concealed, the community continuously resists, creates new discourses, and generates multifaceted senses of place with an imagination that seeks change and appropriation.
